Infrared Photography

VideoTutorial

Raw Infrared Pictures are usually monochrome, red or green and turn out to be unalluring to the naked eye.
They have to be "photoshopped" to get into shape.
It can be a confusing world out there for an Infrared Photographer starting out.
Some of the tutorials you find in the web are useful, some just interesting,
some can even be a bit stupid and might lead you in the wrong direction.

I found a very practical step by step video tutorial
made by one of our r72 infrared group members
nxxos
which might be very helpful for the start and
guarantees a nearly 100% success rate in post processing.

This Video Walkthrough shows some simple steps as outline below...

"1. Using the ruler tool - I fixed the crooked horizon
(after the ruler tool, click on Image - Image Rotation -
Arbitrary and the correct value is already inserted)
and cropped the image afterwards.
2. I auto-adjusted the levels of the whole image
(Image - Adjustments - Levels - Auto).
Since I use this function very often I created a shortcut for it.
That's why you don't see the levels dialogue.
3. With the feathered marquee tool
I auto-adjusted parts of the image separately.
4. I reduced the saturation of magenta tones.
5. The dark top left corner was brightened with the dodge tool
6. Minor adjustments of the curves.
See the resulting photograph below..."

IR Photo + Video Tutorial by nxxos

Ever wondered about IR photography?

gilad is a very succesful photographer on DeviantArt.

The mystery of White Balance

What kind of dramatic effect changes of the White Balance can have on Infrared Photography is shown very clearly in the following Tutorial:

Infrared colour profiles by monkeyheadmushroom
Please click and have a look in original big size!
"Each row shows the shot before and after
a normal channel change, no adjustments have been done
to the original image other than the temperature and tint."

If you are wondering why many IR photos are technically so different in colors and moods here you may find an explanation.
So if you want to find your own style and your "personal handwriting" you might find in this tutorial the perfect hints
just by correcting the White Balance in your camera or with RAW pics in your editing program.

Camera Conversion

Finaly here is a link to a camera conversion step-by-step tutorial to change a Canon 20D into a converted Infrared Camera:
It's showing clearly just as an example how expierenced you have to be and how difficult it is
if you want to make this conversion of your camera at home.
Better is to leave this work to a top technician or just screw an IR filter on top of your lens...

I hope you like all this and it gives you some inspiration! If you have any questions please just ask!
Cheers Michael
